한동대학교가 미국 캘리포니아대학교 산타크루즈(University of California, Santa Cruz, 이하 UCSC)와 차세대 헬스케어 인공지능 기술 개발을 위한 국제 공동연구를 이어간다. 과학기술정보통신부가 지원하고 정보통신기획평가원(IITP)이 운영하는 ‘디지털분야글로벌연구지원’ 사업의 일환으로, 정희서·방승민 대학원생이 3기 파견 연구원으로 선발돼 지난 8월부터 내년 1월까지 UCSC에서 공동연구에 참여한다.
한동대 연구팀은 홍참길 교수를 연구책임자로, 안민규·최희열 교수를 참여 연구진으로 구성해 2024년부터 UCSC Yuyin Zhou 교수 연구팀과 의료 영상, 전자의무기록, 생체 신호 등 서로 다른 형태의 의료 데이터를 활용하는 멀티모달 헬스케어 인공지능 기술을 주제로 3개년 공동연구를 수행해 왔다. 앞선 두 차례의 파견을 통해 양교 연구팀은 의료 인공지능 및 컴퓨터과학 분야 주요 국제학술대회에 공동연구 성과를 발표했으며, 최우수 국제학술대회에 채택된 연구를 비롯한 성과를 이어왔다. 연구 과정에서 개발한 코드와 산출물도 공개해 후속 연구에 활용될 수 있도록 했다.
이번 3기 연구에서는 기존 공동연구를 기반으로 새로운 연구 주제를 발전시킨다. 정희서 대학원생은 분자 구조 정보를 활용한 의료 의사결정 에이전트를, 방승민 대학원생은 뇌파 신호와 BCI(뇌-컴퓨터 인터페이스)를 활용한 헬스케어 방법을 연구한다. 이번 파견을 통해 대학원생들이 해외 연구진과 장기간 협업하며 국제 공동연구 경험을 쌓는 한편, 3년간 이어온 양교의 연구 협력이 향후 연구로도 자연스럽게 이어지기를 기대하고 있다.

Handong Global University is continuing its international joint research with the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) to develop next-generation healthcare artificial intelligence technologies. As part of the “Global Research Support Program in Digital Fields,” supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT and administered by the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP), graduate students Heeseo Jung and Seungmin Bang were selected as the third group of dispatched researchers. They have been participating in joint research at UCSC since August and will continue their research through January next year.
Since 2024, the Handong research team, led by Professor Charmgil Hong as Principal Investigator and with Professors Minkyu Ahn and Heeyoul Choi as participating researchers, has been conducting a three-year joint research project with Professor Yuyin Zhou’s research team at UCSC on multimodal healthcare artificial intelligence technologies that utilize different types of medical data, including medical images, electronic medical records, and biosignals. Through the first two rounds of researcher dispatches, the two universities have presented their joint research findings at major international conferences in medical AI and computer science, including studies accepted to leading international conferences. The research teams have also made their code and research outputs publicly available to support follow-up research.
In the third round of research, the researchers will develop new research topics based on the foundation established through the previous joint projects. Heeseo Jung will conduct research on a medical decision-making agent using molecular structure information, while Seungmin Bang will explore healthcare methods using brainwave signals and BCI (brain-computer interface) technology. Through this research exchange, the graduate students will gain experience in long-term collaboration with international researchers, while the two universities hope to continue their three-year research collaboration through future joint research.
